halcyon, halcyon
the past has passed, those days are done and gone away
wayward son, wayward son
the pigs get fed and you get none
but them's the breaks
when your home is leaving you behind
joey died not long ago, never heard his songs on the radio after all
kim went east and bud went south,
down where that mississippi mouth called again
and there you stand, fidgeting your hands, not knowing just what god demands of you
and there you are, speeding in your car, looking for lightning somewhere far away
and your home ain't waiting round for you
the days ahead, the days behind
oh my son, don't pay them any mind
get your head down from above the clouds
and see the sunlight right before your eyes
halcyon, halcyon
those days are here, they've just begun
be not afraid
wayward son, wayward son
get on your feet, this race ain't run
oh can't you see?
that your home is just a place you've been

they said jesus was an astronaut
they said I'm just a man
but there's angels on the asteroids
and I'll see them if I can
I met you there at midnight
in that dark upper room
the people were all leaving
just leaving me and you
singing fly me to the moon
on the first of june
and laughing like we knew something
remember that october?
back when we were old
the frost was on your windshield
and the streets were lined with gold
you wanted to start over
to live for something more
I kissed you on the mouth and said
"what the hell we waiting for?"
I'd fly you to the moon
if you asked me to
so darling, say that you are with me
naked space
between our bodies
satellites spin slow
no pearly gates
lie there waiting
but the stars are beautiful
the stars are so beautiful

harrison house, shimmering sweetly
sunburned skin and misplaced keys
the branches of youth were budding barely
in the belly of 2015
the dust of the porch, the right hand corner
oh, the sweetness of july
the heat lifted up the swell of morning
swam before our hazy eyes
the water was cool over our footsteps
finally free from mountain snow
the pondskater skipped and shook our voices
bathing us in golden glow
she lie on her back upon the railing
with the sun low in the sky
she looked in my eyes, I saw her halo
shining so bright
and who can say what was real?
august 14th, her fires burning
through the fields and hearts the same
summer's green grace, her red hair dancing
set those holy woods aflame
the redness of dusk, the taste of woodsmoke
seeping through the open door
we counted the cracks on the ceiling
as we lay there on the floor
nothing to do, nowhere to go, and no one to be
harrison house, your old and faded photograph in my mind's eye
wrapped up within the breath of autumn
how the years do pass us by
